В статье рассматриваются проблематика и символика света и тьмы в «Русских ночах» В. Ф. Одоевского. Название и начало романа актуализируют вопросы темноты и мрака, как физического, так и духовного. Лейтмотив произведения — непрестанное стремление к свету,непосредственно связанное с проблемами просвещения. В русском слове «просвещение» мерцают разные смыслы, отсылающие как к западноевропейской, так и византийской традициям: это и «свет разума», и «Свет Христов», который «просвещает всех». Оба значения принципиально важно учитывать при интерпретации художественных произведений и публицистических высказываний Одоевского (как и русской классики в целом). Одоевский ратовал за развитие науки и техники, но неизменно предупреждал о духовном тупике, в который приведет человечество увлечение сугубо материальными интересами. Важнейшее значение, согласно писателю, имеет путь познания истины — он должен синтезировать в себе разум и «инстинктуальную» силу, наивысший источник которой — божественное откровение. Основной текст романа — собственно «ночи» — исполнены сомнений и вопросов, путь к преодолению царящего мрака и подлинному просвещению указывается в Эпилоге. Именно России, был убежден писатель, суждено спасти европейский мир, поскольку только в ней сохранился подлинный свет — православная вера, именно она способна вывести человечество из темного тупика рационализма.
